This website is designed for students and parents to stay informed about Señora Hrabovecky's Spanish class. I consider it a privilege, as well as a great responsibility, to introduce you to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Language is a bridge to understanding other people and their perspectives, which helps us better understand our world. I am looking forward to meeting some of you for the first time this year, as well as seeing familiar faces!
Please scroll down to learn more about what we will be doing throughout the year, our classroom expectations and procedures. Keep in mind that there are two grades ( 6th & 8th) represented here, so make sure to look at the title of each section as you read.
Grado 6:
The curriculum is based in conjunction with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for World Language on the series Realidades A, which is used as a basis for vocabulary and thematic units, but many supplemental resources--Internet websites, films, music, stories, poems, newspapers, pictures, gestures, student pen-pals--are used to make the language and culture come alive for the students.
At this level, students are being provided with input (both spoken and written) through teacher and class discussion, pictures, gestures, stories, songs and videos. The Hispanic culture, as well as cultures from all over the world, are shared and experienced in order to gain new perspectives and a broader understanding of language and life.
Grado 8:
In 8th grade Spanish this year, students will not only be learning a language, but will seek to gain new perspectives as well. We will be focusing, of course, on Spanish and the Hispanic culture, but will also take time to explore other languages and cultures as a way to gain a broader understanding of the world in which we live.
The curriculum is based on the series Realidades B, which is used as a basis for vocabulary and thematic units, but many supplemental resources--Internet websites, films, music, stories, poems, newspapers, pictures, gestures, student pen-pals--are used to make the language and culture come alive for the students.
*Did you know that learning a new language actually makes you smarter in general? Your ability to "figure things out" is crucial when learning another language, and it will carry over into all other aspects of your life .
Tests/Quizzes: A parent and/or guardian signature will be required for all major tests. This signature will be considered a homework assignment, and must be returned within one class period. These signatures are a way for parents to stay informed about their student's progress in Spanish class.
Absence:
Go to the "Homework" section to see what absent students missed. This section includes what we did in class. HOMEWORK WILL BE IN CAPITAL LETTERS! When someone is absent, he or she can access this website to find out about the homework. Each student will also receive the phone number of a "compañero" (buddy) that can be called to discuss missed classwork. That buddy will also be responsible for collecting any extra worksheets distributed during class that day and placing them in your personal Spanish folder. Upon your return to school, it will be your responsibility to view check your personal Spanish folder to see if any worksheets were placed inside. There will also be a homework BINDER in which you can find any information on what we did in class the day(s) you were absent. You have one class period in addition to the amount of classes missed to turn in any assignments.
Late Work:
All late work will receive a penalty. Incomplete assignments are considered late, and will be returned to be finished.
